Hertford Bridge, commonly known as the Bridge of Sighs after the famous bridge of that name in Venice, spans two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane and was completed in 1914. The writer Evelyn Waugh came up to Hertford College in 1922 to study History and in his famous 1945 novel, "Brideshead Revisited", he had his main protagonist, Charles Ryder, follow in his footsteps. The novel is a wonderful evocation of Oxford University life in the 1920's.
