The Radcliffe Camera is part of Oxford University and is the main reading room of the Bodleian Library. It is used by students of English, History and Theology and houses approximately 600,000 books in underground rooms beneath Radcliffe Square. It was designed by James Gibbs and built between 1737 and 1749 with money bequeathed by the immensely rich John Radcliffe, a self-made man who had risen from obscurity to become the Royal Physician.
